Anne's Story

I care about your success

From both my professional work and personal experience I know how painful it can be when a family isn't happy, and how satisfying it is to create strong, healthy relationships that change and grow as you do. My first husband and I had some major challenges and worked with several different therapists over many years. Some were almost no help, maybe even harmful, others were quite helpful, but in all it was a long and discouraging process. We eventually divorced and went on to face all of the added challenges of splitting apart our lives, finding ways to still parent and support our children, remarriages, and bringing our new spouses and their children into the family.

Before I became a therapist, I taught first and second grade and then was able to stay home with my children as they were growing up. Many of the children in my classroom had parents who loved and cared for them, but lacked the knowledge and skill to overcome the incredible challenges they faced and parent effectively, and, of course, they could not teach their children to do what they themselves did not know how to do, and so the cycle continued. As my own children grew, I saw that many parents, myself included, wanted to do better in their relationships with their partner and with their children, but again, did not know how.

These experiences and others led me back to school to get a master’s degree in social work. I’ve worked with individuals, couples, and families of all ages and diverse backgrounds and helped them grow stronger and healthier as they face life’s challenges with new insights and practical, proven tools.

I continually seek out training from established experts so that I can offer you effective therapy based on current research and practical, proven treatment interventions.

Like most therapists, I received little formal training in graduate school for working with couples and families. I had excellent on-the-job training from my graduate level supervisors and while working at a community based agency and the Veterans Administration before I went into private practice. I have completed Levels 1 and 2 of the research based Gottman Method Couples Therapy clinical training. I am part of an on-going, advanced training group with internationally acclaimed Dr. Ellyn Bader and Dr. Peter Pearson of the Couples Institute© using the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. I have been working with them since 2009 and am profoundly grateful for my long and continued access to their combined wisdom and expertise.

I’m passionate about doing the best possible work  and continually seek out additional training and resources. Working with families to create the kind of resilient lives they dream about is tremendously satisfying and challenges me to grow and stretch.

Research confirms that therapy is most effective when there is a strong, safe bond between the therapist and the clients. I consider it a great privilege to work with so many wonderful individuals, couples and families who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work building stronger, more resilient lives.
