Guess what? We were wrong!
OK, not totally wrong, but wow, did we have a lot to learn! After already coming through multiple bouts of cancer, infertility, the death of a spouse and a grandchild, divorce, the lifelong challenges of living with Tourette syndrome, OCD, and ADD, combining two families into a blended one, and so much more, my husband, Cal, and I thought maybe we knew a thing or two about resiliency. We started collaborating, putting together Cal’s stories with my thoughts about key resiliency skills from my therapy practice, and then…
- Cal fell off his bike…
- Hit his head HARD…
- Couldn’t remember how he got home…
- Wasn’t really himself…
- Couldn’t focus, got upset more easily…
Time passed. We were doing all the things his doctors suggested, but he really wasn’t getting better.
- In fact, he was slowly getting worse…
- Tired all the time…
- Feeling weaker and weaker…
- Shaking chills and soaking sweats…
- Tests and more tests…
- Guess what? He had advanced cancer.
Surgery. Complications. Chemotherapy. More complications. Tests. More tests. Treatments. More treatments. Repeated trips through the ER. Multiple hospitalizations. Days. Weeks. Months.
And now? Please celebrate with us!!!
Cal is in remission, slowly recovering his health and strength. We are both getting used to a new normal and have learned SO MUCH MORE ABOUT RESILIENCY!
A couple of weeks ago, we were sitting together on the couch in our living room, talking about our dream of getting our book out into the world, and we asked ourselves, “Do we dare?” “Is this the time?”
YES!
So, please join us as we dust off the manuscript and get ready to welcome our “baby” into the world. We have committed to a book launch date of June 18. Thanks to all of you for your patience and concern through this amazing and crazy journey so far. A caring community is such a big part of what makes living resiliently possible.
More updates to come.
